Stella - Statement on Cultural Safety, Equity and Inclusion

Stella celebrates women and non-binary writers to create a vibrant, equitable national culture. Through storytelling and reading, we foster connection, understanding, and combat gender bias.

On gender

We recognise that gender is not static and that rigid binaries reinforce inequality. Stella advocates for nuanced, respectful conversation about gender.

On discrimination and racism

Discrimination based on gender, race, age, class, culture, disability, sexuality, religion, and ethnicity intersects in complex ways. Stella takes an intersectional feminist approach, opposing all forms of racism and discrimination, and actively working to dismantle structural barriers faced by women writers with diverse lived experiences.

On creating a culturally safe, equitable and inclusive environment

We are committed to creating a culturally safe, equitable, and inclusive environment for writers, our staff, board, ambassadors, judges, partners, donors, sponsors, and other supporters. This engagement is founded on respect and recognition of each other’s dignity across different lived experiences and perspectives.

All community members should feel safe in their identity, treated equitably, and valued. We do not tolerate hate speech. We are all responsible for engaging with respect, openness, humility, curiosity, and a willingness to listen—strengthening our understanding and deepening our connections.

Help change the story

As a not-for-profit organisation with ambitious goals, Stella relies on the generous support of donors to help fund our work.

Every donation is important to us and allows Stella to continue its role as the leading voice for gender equality and cultural change in Australian literature.
